SCALES 'N TALES CHARTERS

SITKA DETAILS - 2009

  • Alaska Airlines allows two pieces of checked baggage per passenger, up to 50 pounds each.  You may want to carry on most of your gear to leave room for your boxes of fish on you return.
  • You will pickup your rental car at the NorthStar Rent a Car desk within the airport terminal.  All rental charges, including one tank of fuel, are prepaid.  A driver’s license and credit card (for insurance purposes) must be presented when the car is picked up.  If any problems arise, their phone number is 1-800-722-6927 or (907) 966-2266.
  • Your waterfront hotel rooms have been arranged at the Cascade Inn, 2035 Halibut Point Rd.  This is located about a mile north of town on the only major road.  Their phone number is 1-800-532-0908 or (907) 747-6572.

  • You will obtain your fishing licenses when you check in to your hotel.  Set the start time to 5:00am on the first morning that we will be fishing.  Please be sure and request these licenses if they somehow forget to provide them.

  • Your deck boots and raingear will be waiting for you in duffel bags at the hotel when you check in.  Be sure to bring them to the boat with you.  On your last day of fishing please put some shoes in your car so that you can leave the bags, dirty raingear and boots in my car at the dock.

  • I provide coffee, and muffins for breakfast on the boat.  For lunch we usually have turkey, ham, or roast beef and cheese for custom made sandwiches, chips, cookies, and soft drinks.  If you have any special dietary  request,  please let me know and I will be happy to try and accommodate you.

  • I try to leave the dock around  4:30 am.  The rest of the charter fleet usually leaves at 5:00am.  I like to be the first boat away from the dock which makes for a more peaceful journey to the fishing grounds and gives us first crack at some fishing locations.  My boat, the Storyteller, is moored at the Cove Marina which is 4.8 miles north of the only stoplight in town on Halibut Point Road.  It takes about 10 minutes from your hotel to the dock.  Go down the main ramp, turn left at the bottom, and I am at the end of the first finger pier on the right hand side.  We will be returning to the dock between 2:00-3:00pm.

  • We provide all of the tackle and bait that you will need.  We have Loomis graphite rods and Shimano reels for bait fishing.  For jigging we have a lighter Loomis graphite rod and Shimano Bantam 50 reels.  For bottom fishing we have 80# gear with Lamiglas rods and Shimano lever drag reels.  We are confident that our tackle is the best that is available.

  • Bring a camera with lots of film.  The scenery and wildlife are really special.

  • If any members of your party are prone to seasickness, please take some preventative measures.  Nothing will ruin a person’s day more than being ill on the boat.  Scopolamine patches are usually the most effective preventative, but require a prescription and should be obtained before your trip.  They have the advantage of allowing you to put one on after you begin to feel ill, but they do take up to 3 hours to take effect.  An effective non prescription combination is Bonine, along with pseudoephedrine (Sudafed 30mg) to counteract the drowsiness from the Bonine.  They are both over the counter drugs.  It is necessary to take them at least one hour before encountering rough water.  Once you begin to feel ill, you cannot take them because you can’t keep them down and they will make you feel worse.

  • Your fish will be filleted, vacuum packed and frozen when we get back to the dock.  It will then be boxed for transport home.  It will be packed in 50 to 70lb waxed boxes.  The cost of two boxes are included in your package.  Your fish boxes will be transported to the airport when you leave for home.

  • Finally, my number in Sitka is (907) 747-5781.  Please give me a call when you arrive in town to finalize our morning departure or if you encounter any problems.
